‘Marrakesh blues’

Marrakesh Blues is a personal investigation into some of the influences in my life. I grew up in Spain, which has had a strong Moorish influence throughout history. These influences are integrated in the music I listen to, the food I eat, and the architecture and design around me. I underestimated the impact these influences had on my view of design, and I wanted to reconnect through textiles to my roots to redefine my identity.
Memories of Marrakesh explores these through colour, shapes, and playful compositions. The collection draws from visual inspiration and personal snapshots from my trip to Marrakesh. These studies are accomplished through a rich and bold exploration of materials and processes, including screen printing, flocking, rug-making, embroidery, and digital processes. By combining digital and hand printing I developed a collection of vibrant printed wallpapers, fabrics, and hard surfaces for high-end home interiors and lifestyle products. These surface patterns depict the vibrancy, richness and sense of adventure I experienced in Marrakesh.

Process and techniques

My investigations into finding the ‘right balance in my work between analogue and digital techniques’, led me to investigate rug-making, exploring tufting and hook and pull. These techniques allowed me to slow down my processes and re-evaluate my identity and ethics as a designer. The outcome is a fun and tactful collection of rugs, as well as beautiful highly crafted waistcoat, that will hopefully be treasured and looked after through generations to come.
